The material presented on this website will provide valuable information and a better understanding of Neurointerventional Surgery (NIS), also referred to as Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology (ESN) and Interventional neuroradiology (INR), a relatively new and exciting specialty that offers minimally invasive approaches to treating patients with cerebrovascular disorders. Neurointerventional surgery involves navigation through the body’s blood vessels, with microcatheters which are inserted in the groin area and, under X-ray guidance, threaded through the blood vessels leading into the brain.
Dear Visitors,

I’d like to share with you my personal life story, as you may consider referring a patient or sharing your own medical problem with me.
My story represents the “American Dream.” I came to the United States in 1988 as an immigrant from Poland, at a time when “solidarity” was still struggling to topple communism. From humble beginnings with no English skills and only a few hundred dollars in my pocket, I was given an opportunity to train at excellent medical institutions and to learn from visionaries in my field. My education and training at Columbia University in New York, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and the University of California in Los Angeles gave me the tools with which to write an exciting chapter in my life.
Following my training, I co-founded and built the Mid-America Brain & Stroke Institute in Kansas City, which has become one of the busiest stroke centers in the United States, if not in the world. My work there in part led to FDA approval of a mechanical embolectomy device “concentric device” in 2005 to treat brain blockages in stroke victims. My move to the windy city came in March 2007, when I joined CINN Medical Group. In 2009, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) and CINN physicians assembled as one of the most experienced and respected teams in the country to treat brain and neurovascular conditions. I am now practicing at NorthShore University HealthSystem’s Skokie and Oak Lawn locations as well as at Advocate Christ — Oak Lawn.
Now in my mid-40s, I continue to pour my passion into furthering the field of Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology through my medical practice, as an active lecturer, and through my research.
As doctors, we realize that medicine can be very confusing when it comes to treatment options. I consider it my duty and a privilege as a physician to educate patients about this exciting field of medicine and the advantages it can offer to patients, including less risk and a faster recovery period. I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you further.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Grobelny, MD
