CC fistulae Treatment Options

ENDOVASCULAR EMOBILIZATION

Endovascular embolization treatment is by placing a catheter into the blood vessels and injecting materials to block off the fistula and/or the vein and is a treatment of choice for many of these conditions.

The most common endovascular treatment with highest cure rate for indirect, low flow C-C fistulae is so called trans-venous approach by navigating small catheter for embolization from groin to fistula site at cavernous sinus behind the eye via veins and sinuses. However treatment may vary because of fistula type, complexity and anatomical consideration.

The high flow type C-C fistulae are frequently approached via carotid artery to cross into the cavernous sinus to block the fistula, rarely complete carotid artery blockage is necessary for a cure.
Because of their location, carotid-cavernous fistulae are difficult to treat surgically.
